A TDD is a telecommunications device for the deaf, what this does is allows the hearing-impaired person text their communication through the phone lines. The people on the other end hear an electronic voice converting the text to sound, then when the person responds to the hearing impaired person a text will show up through the TDD.

The TTY’s are similar for the TDD, they work the same way too. The conversations through a TDD can be recorded on paper through a printer that is compatible with the TDD. There are many different TDD’s available, you want to get the best one for the money you spend.

You should make sure that the TDD you purchase has the best features available. You may need a call progress key; this will show you what stage the call is at, whether it is ringing or busy or answering machine picking up. You also want to have an auto answer. This will cause the phone to pick up the line if you don’t see the incoming call light flash.

You want something that is going to have an emergency call button, a relay dial and a greeting memo; this serves like a message you hear before the answering machine picks up. These types of machines are costly and most insurances will pay for them. Sometimes you can get them through the phone company itself.
