You have heard of Seeing Eye dogs, dogs that are trained to help the vision impaired with their lives. They also have organizations that have hearing dogs, the premise is the same, and they train dogs to help people with hearing loss. There are many of these organizations around the country. If you have never heard of them, do some research they may be the answer to your problems.

One such organization is called Dogs for the Deaf; the non-profit organization was founded in 1977 by a man named Roy Karat. Mr. Kabat worked with circus and movie animals as a trainer. He at one time in his career even bred dogs for movie roles in Hollywood. Two of his greatest achievements were training the animals for Dr. Doolittle and Born Free.

Dogs for the deaf is non-profit and run their organizations based on donations. Any size or amount of the donation is greatly appreciated but it is also not necessary in order to use their charity. The dogs that are uses in the Dogs for the Deaf program are typically found in shelters where if the dogs don’t get adopted then they are put to sleep. By getting their dogs the animal shelters it also helps control the homeless dog populations.

The dogs are mixed breeds there is not one specific breed that is used. They use dogs that are young enough to be taught. The dogs are generally up to 3 years old. As long as the dogs are healthy, full of energy and can pass a medical exam, they can begin training. Most of the dogs chosen are trainable and can be a great help to a hearing impaired person.

If you know someone who is suffering from hearing loss and can maybe benefit from this type of help. Contact your local Dogs for the Deaf and see what they have available. They are a great organization and they are respected in the charity world.
