You may have heard of these letters before or maybe you have seen them in hotels or in rest stops off major highways. What they stand for is, the TTY is a typewriter with the power of electronic communications. It is a terminal much like a typewriter but it can speak for the deaf people.

You can buy these TTY’s at any phone store location or you may order one through the phone company. But they are available online as well. One of the better models of TTY should have these features, there is a volume increase button and that should be able to be pushed up to about 20db. Direct connect is important, what this feature does is that when the person using the TTY is calling someone, there won’t be a middleman transferring the call, it would go through the phone line just like a regular call.

Another great feature the TTY should have is speed dial keys, just like a standard phone, an in case of emergency list or numbers most commonly dialed. The call progress display, this is a display on the TTY that shows the hearing impaired caller what the status of the call is, whether the phone is busy or ringing. Most of the TTY’s have an auto answer feature, just like an answering machine but the messages come out in text form.

When you are getting a TTY one of the most important options to get is the printer so you can print out the messages that are left for you or you can read what is being sent over to you. Standard options should be a memory card, a built in ring flasher light and an auto ID.
